So You've Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson
So the person screwed up terribly.
It may be a racist joke or harebrained comment.
And when his transgressions were revealed on social media, strangers all over the world had united to destroy him. The collective outrage circles lash at him at hurricane force, believing that they’re righting the wrongs. The justice guarders along with thousands marching behind them, criticizing and demonizing the person. The person’s life is torn apart, justice wins.
Yet, without questioning the efficacy and righteous of public shaming, this type of behavior is nearly equivalent to the 18th century witch-hunt.
Does this person really deserve this much punishment?
Proportionality is an essential factor in trying to redress wrongs, yet the ramifications of being publicly shamed on social media is usually significantly disproportionate to a person’s mistake. Public shaming on social media can effortlessly destroy a person's family, career and life.
Relentlessly entertaining while thought provoking.
